Tenement H: A Modular Cabinet Inspired by Bangkok's Shophouses

A Versatile Storage Solution Reflecting Thai Life

This project is part of the 'Design Plant' exhibition for Bangkok Design Week, where young product designers explore new design possibilities. The concept for this project is 'DOMESTIC', aiming to create a piece that reflects the lives of Thai, especially Bangkok, people. The 'Tenement H' collection is the result of designers exploring the shapes, forms, colors, and functions of Bangkok's charming and chaotic architecture.

'Tenement H' is an experimental project that explores new possibilities for Bangkok through designs by three young student designers. The collection features aluminum modular cabinets inspired by the shophouses in Bangkok, where different facades are used for different functions and purposes. These modular cabinets are designed to be customizable, allowing users to choose their own facade based on their needs. The cabinets can also be adjusted to open from either the front, back, or both ways, making them suitable for use as semi-partitions as well.

The materials used for the 'Tenement H' collection are aluminum, which provides durability and lightweight functionality for its customizable and movable features. The dimensions of each cabinet are 1200 x 400 x 1350 mm, making them suitable for various spaces and configurations.

This modular storage unit is designed to be light and durable, with each module featuring a different closing mechanism, ranging from scissor gates to accordion doors and shutters. Users can configure each unit according to the available space, allowing for vertical or wider base setups. The versatility of the 'Tenement H' collection makes it suitable for different storage needs and room layouts.

The 'Tenement H' collection was developed in Bangkok from October 2020 to February 2021 and will be exhibited at ATT19 during Bangkok Design Week 2021. The design process involved extensive research, including visits to various neighborhoods in Bangkok to observe and discuss the shapes, forms, and functions of different facades. The designers also studied how people interacted with these facades and how unconventional functions were created in everyday use. The ideas gathered from this research were then transformed into storage modular units based on objects that would fit inside each design.

The project faced several challenges, including its collaborative nature between undergraduate students, design mentors, and furniture manufacturers. This unique working environment required adaptation and collaboration from all parties involved. Additionally, scaling down the mechanics of different facades into small cabinet doors required intensive testing and exploration during the production phase.

Tenement H is a modular cubby storage system that reflects the exhibition's domestic theme. Inspired by the multifaceted facades of Bangkok shophouses, Tenement H features customizable barriers that range from scissor gates to accordion doors, shutters, and railings. Constructed from aluminum, Tenement H is modular and versatile by design, allowing access to the storage units from all sides and functioning as a semi-partition for your room.

The 'Tenement H' collection was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The 'Tenement H' collection is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings while contributing to a better world.
